PHOENIX — Don’t punch that ticket on Mel Tucker coming to Georgia as defensive coordinator just yet.

Tucker is a candidate to succeed Larry Coker as head coach at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), according to some media reports. Tucker, who is defensive backs coach and assistant head coach at Alabama, was recently contacted about the job. Whether the job has been offered or if he would accept it has not been determined.

It has been widely reported that Tucker is going to follow new Georgia head coach Kirby Smart to Athens to become defensive coordinator after Monday’s College Football Playoff championship game. Tucker, a longtime NFL defensive coordinator, has been at Alabama for one year.

Tucker will be here at the Phoenix Convention Center this morning with the rest of the Alabama team. Check back for updates.
