ATHENS — Davin Bellamy and Lorenzo Carter dominate most discussions about Georgia’s outside linebackers. But figuring just as prominently into the Bulldogs’ plans is Chuks Amaechi.

In fact, Amaechi, a senior from Avondale, Ariz., is the most versatile player of Georgia’s linebacker corps and is expected to be able to play not only both outside linebacker spots, but inside and hybrid positions as well.

So not only is he the primary backup at “Sam” and “Jack,” he also has the ability to play “Mike,” “Will,” “Money” and pretty much any other name Mel Tucker and Kevin Sherrer can come up with for playing linebacker.

“I’m learning all of them,” Amaechi says with a laugh.

There are reasons Amaechi may get overlooked. As a first-year transfer out of Arizona Western Junior College last year, he finished with only five total tackles last year. And then he had to undergo labrum surgery after the season. So he sat out Georgia’s entire spring practice session.

But he says he’s back to 100 percent healthy now. In fact, he gained 15 pounds over the summer and now is playing with 245 pounds on his 6-3 frame. He insist it was good weight gain and has been impressive in Georgia’s camp so far.

“He’s one of our most versatile guys,” fellow outside linebacker Davin Bellamy said. “He has great instincts when it comes to game. He’s an older guy, so he has all the things that come with that. He’s very athletic and can play multiple positions for us.”

Amaechi’s also one of the Bulldogs’ more personable players and is not afraid to share his opinion on pretty much anything.

Here are some of the thoughts Amaechi shared after Thursday’s storm-shortened practice:

On Georgia’s revamped outside linebacker corps …

We feel confident. We lost Jordan (Jenkins) and we lost Flo (Leonard Floyd), but we feel like it’s not going to be that big of a loss because we were taking the same amount of reps as them, doing the same types of things, learning from them. So that when they had to leave we’d be able to pick it up right after they left.”

On the best player he’s played with …

“Jordan Jenkins was just so versatile, one of the most athletic players I’ve seen first hand. I think he could play any position on the field, but outside linebacker was where he could use most of his ability.”

On playing so many different positions …

“The first couple of days, I can’t lie, I was kind of in shock, dumbfounded, at all the plays. But I sat down and read the playbook and saw that a lot of the plays are about the same, just called a little bit different. So you kind of understand where it comes from.”

The hardest part of playing outside linebacker …

“When it’s fast ball (hurry-up offense) and you’re going from a regular package to a sub package and you realize that you’re not the outside linebacker, now you’re the d-end. So I’m watching film everyday and learning, trying to pick it up from there.”

On what he’s seen out of tailback Nick Chubb. …

“I feel like Chubb hasn’t lost anything. He’s still the animal he was when I first came here.”

On what Georgia’s offense has looked like in camp …

“The offense as a whole, it’s looking good. Bringing in Coach (Jim) Chaney, he’s an offensive guru. Bringing somebody like Coach (Sam) Pittman who’s coaching up the o-lineman, it’s kind of hard beating them in one-on-ones now because Coach Pittman he’s teaching them techniques I’ve never seen before. It used to be easy to beat them off the edge but now it’s getting hard.”

On new offensive tackle Tyler Catalina, a transfer from Rhode Island …

“He’s strong. He’s a strong kid. If you’re running off the edge, if you let him latch on to you, let him get his hands inside your chest plate, you might not make it. You might not go anywhere. He’s taking you where he wants to take you.”
