So when Baker Mayfield singled it was over after Rodrigo Blankenship missed a field goal early in the game, it was not in fact over.
The Bulldogs rallied back to win 54-48 in double overtime after trailing by as many as 17 in the first half. The Georgia defense gave up just one touchdown in the second half and held Oklahoma to two field goal attempts in the overtime period.
After the game, one of Georgia’s most outspoken defensive players, Davin Bellamy found Mayfield and had a simple message to the sometimes cocky sometimes confident Oklahoma quarterback.
“Humble yourself” Bellamy yelled at Mayfield.
It’s a tough end to Mayfield’s wonderful career, which included two College Football Playoff appearances and a Heisman Trophy. He was a controversial player for sure, but he was also one of the naiton’s best in his time at Oklahoma.
As for Bellamy and the Georgia defense, they’ll get a chance to win the school’s first national title since 1980. The national championship game is scheduled for 8 PM ET on ESPN. Georgia will play the winner of the Clemson-Alabama game.
