Georgia football-Florida live updates, practice news

6:15 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 27 update: James Cook and Kearis Jackson spoke to the media, discussing the quarterback situation, the health status of George Pickens and the Georgia-Florida rivalry.

  • “It’s fascinating to go back to my home state and play in this game.” -- James Cook on the Georgia-Florida rivalry
  • “Both of them are preparing like they’re going to start. I don’t know who’s going to start or who’s going to play more. But both are preparing like they want to start.” -- James Cook on the quarterback situation.
  • “No regrets. Just come prepared and ready to play. Just that feeling coming off the field last year and knowing what we could’ve done. That’s what we’ve been holding onto this week.” -- Cook on last year’s loss.
  • “It did help. Just try to lead my team the best way that I can. Try and accomplish something with them so we won’t have the same feeling we had last year.” -- James Cook on how this year has gone.
  • “That’s the whole goal of it. To have fun with what you’re doing. If you’re not having fun it’s going to be off. As an older player, I have to smile a lot.” -- Cook on what he has learned this year.
  • Cook did note that Kenny McIntosh will be back for Saturday’s game against Florida.
  • Kearis Jackson says he stayed after practice to continue working on punts after what happened against Kentucky. He bobbled two punts in that game.
  • “It’s been exciting to get guys back. You know we have been down some. The bye week came at the perfect time. Having those guys back in the receiver room has been fun.” -- Jackson on getting healthy at the wide receiver position.
  • “You have to have awareness. You have to find ways to get open and just be available for my QB.” -- Kearis Jackson on playing with a mobile quarterback.
  • “Feel like I’m getting back to myself.” -- Kearis on his injury status.
  • “If you’re a playmaker, you’re itching to get back out there. He’s doing the smart thing. He’s been doing the right thing by making sure he’s in treatment every day and trying to get back.” -- Kearis Jackon on George Pickens.

11:00 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 27 update: Kirby Smart acknowledged that Georgia is in a better place than it was at the wide receiver now than it was before the Auburn game.

Smart is hoping to see Jermaine Burton, Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint and Arian Smith all back on the field against Florida this weekend. Burton has been hobbled by a groin injury, while Rosemy-Jacksaint has an ankle.

Smith meanwhile has not played since the UAB game to a lower leg contusion. Smart has said pain tolerance is a big reason Smith has been unable to see the field.

“He’s much closer this week,” Smart said of Smith.” He’s been on about a 50 percent pitch count. He’s been repping with the twos. He’s getting reps and I think he’s looked better this week than he has in the past. We’ve got to hope that continues the rest of the week.”

But it’s still not a clean bill of health for the receiver room. Dominick Blaylock is unlikely to play as is George Pickens. Smart also revealed that Justin Robinson is now dealing with a hamstring injury. He was one of the few Georgia wide receivers who hadn’t been dealing with an injury during the 2021 season. If Robinson misses time, that would leave Ladd McConkey, Adonai Mitchell and Jaylen Johnson as the only wide receivers to play in every game so far this season.

At some point Georgia would like to get its full cache of wide receivers on the field. But Smart will take the small victory in seeing Smith, Burton and Rosemy-Jacksaint all suited up and contributing against Florida.

“Just those three alone is a huge boost,” Smart said.

Georgia also shared some pictures from Tuesday’s practice. The Bulldogs will return to the practice field on Wednesday in preparation for Saturday’s game against Florida.

6:20 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 26 update: Georgia coach Kirby Smart is set to speak with the media. Defensive players Travon Walker and Latavious Brini will speak to reporters as well.

  • Smart begins by advocating for defensive players to be considered for the Heisman. Also praises the impact of Jordan Davis and how he helps create more third and longs.
  • “He’s looked good. There’s hasn’t been a lot of limitations in terms of what he’s been able to do.” -- Smart on JT Daniels
  • “They’ve been the beneficiary of a good rush and they’ve made some good plays when they’ve had their opportunities. You have to punish people with mistakes and capitalize when they happen. We’re a work in progress in the secondary.”
  • “They really did a great job and we did a really poor job of covering that.” Kirby Smart on wheel routes last year.
  • “He’s the commander in chief of making our calls. Very instinctive football player.” -- Kirby Smart on Nakobe Dean.
  • “The best thing that Adam does is rush. And coach Lanning has freed Adam up to rush the opposing team’s tackle. He’s done a good job of doing that. He’s become a more complete every down player.” -- Kirby Smart on Adam Anderson.
  • “We’re hoping to get Arian back. Just a lower leg contusion that is really bothering him when he plants and runs.” -- Kirby Smart on Arian Smith.
  • “I feel like we’re better off than we were going into the Auburn game. But I don’t think where we need to be with getting our receivers back.” -- Kirby Smart on the wide receivers.
  • “He has packages of players to highlight his best players. He’s taken what other NFL teams and college teams to do well incorporated into his offense.” -- Kirby Smart on Dan Mullen.
  • “Dan doesn’t abort the run. He uses his run game to set up his play actions. Those guys are really good runners. These guys are elusive and powerful.” -- Kirby Smart on the Florida quarterbacks.

9:00 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 26 update: The first practice of the week is in the books for Georgia, meaning we’re one step closer to finding out how the quarterback situation will shake out.

Georgia coach Kirby Smart mentioned often on Monday that practice would be the barometer for whether JT Daniels or Stetson Bennett end up starting for the Bulldogs.

“It will be based on how practice goes,” Smart said. “No determination has been made, nor will it be made. It’s based on performance on the field.”

Georgia will practice on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday as well to get a better understanding of the quarterback position. Smart added that Daniels was able to throw without pain when the Bulldogs practiced last week, a sign that he was getting closer to being healthy.

Daniels has missed the last three games with the lat injury. Bennett has gone 3-0 in those starts and looked quite comfortable leading the Georgia offense.

Both Daniels and Bennett were photographed at practice on Monday, along with a host of other Bulldogs. You can see those below.

12:00 p.m., Monday, Oct. 25 update: Georgia coach Kirby Smart is set to speak to the media at 12 p.m. ET and players will follow shortly after.

  • Smart says Georgia began game planning for Florida last week. Players were off this weekend.
  • “Everything is going to be based on practice. No decision has been made. Didn’t have pain before, during or after.” -- Smart on the quarterback situation and JT Daniels.
  • “It’s based on performance on the field.”
  • “The SEC is a really tough conference to play in. It’s a tough conference. Florida has been in a couple of close games that they’ve been on the wrong side of.” -- Smart on the difference between the SEC East and West
  • “Chemistry is very important. I feel like we don’t have a chemistry issue with either quarterback.” Smart says the offense usually doesn’t notice who has been back there.
  • “He always does a great job of utilizing the skillset of the players he has. He’s proven he can win with all kinds of QBs. He plays to the skillset of his skill players.” -- Smart on Dan Mullen.
  • “I’m really okay with whoever gives us the best chance to win with. That’s based on practice and health.” -- Smart on the quarterback position.
  • “They really don’t hold back. There’s plays within each game that both quarterbacks run. Most packages they both carry. I think they’re tough guys to defend.” -- Smart on quarterbacks Emory Jones and Anthony Ricardson.
  • “The depth on the defensive line as a whole is big. We didn’t play real well honestly. I think Jordan being back and being healthy is huge for controlling the run game. They’ve played against him before and they know he’s a good player.” -- Smart on Jordan Davis.
  • They were all able to practice last week. We hope to have them back to 100 percent. It’s a matter of if they’re able to practice. I think Chris and Kenny are much closer.” -- Smart on the injury situation.
  • “This game isn’t about rankings. It’s never been about rankings. It’s not about records. I don’t think it ever is. It’s more about what we do.”
  • “It’s certainly going to help recovery in terms of legs. We’re hopeful Jermaine is going to be 100 percent. Dom and George are still a little ways away. It’s one of those deals where we’re trying to get healthy. We’re hopeful to get Arian back.” -- Smart on the receiver injuries.
  • “They’re either first in the SEC in explosive plays. Their run game has been really special. When you talk about Florida up front, they have massive men. Bigger than what we’ve faced. I think they’re really talented on the perimeter. They play special teams like we do.” -- Smart on Florida.
  • “Don’t know how long on Kendall. Slight MCL. Nakobe is fine.” -- Smart on Kendall Milton and Nakobe Dean with regards to injuries.
  • “I think our secondary has obviously been very young. They’ve meshed, they’ve communicated well. Limiting explosive plays in the run game and the pass game is really critical in this game. You can’t give up repeated explosives and expect to win games.” -- Smart on the Georgia secondary.
  • “I think we’ve got some different ways to look at some things and communicate better. We gotta play well on the perimeter. We gotta do all the same things we do every week. We’ve got to affect the quarterback. A lot of this year has been with being able to stop the run.” -- Smart on what is different about this defense.

The No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs return to action after a bye week. Georgia will travel to Jacksonville, Fla., to take on the Florida Gators in the latest installment of this classic rivalry.

Georgia comes in as a heavy favorite, as the Bulldogs are 7-0 and hold the No. 1 ranking in both polls. Florida is 4-3 this season and unranked for the first time all year.

Despite the perceived gap between the two programs, this game will mean quite a bit to both sides. Florida beat Georgia 44-28 last season in Jacksonville, Fla., making it the first time Dan Mullen beat Kirby Smart as a head coach.

Both teams enter the game with questions at quarterback. For Georgia, JT Daniels continues to get healthier. But one of the bigger stories this week will be whether or not he is healthy enough to earn the starting job over Stetson Bennett. In the four games Bennett has started, he’s thrown 10 touchdowns and zero interceptions.

As for Florida, Emory Jones started the first seven games of the season. But Anthony Richardson finished the LSU game for the Gators and seems like the more promising option between the two.

The winner of this game has won the SEC East in each of the six seasons. A win for the Bulldogs would mark a continuation of that trend. A Georgia win and Kentucky loss this weekend would clinch the division for the Bulldogs.
