Georgia Baseball-Campbell: Preview

Georgia is back in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2011 and for the first time since Scott Stricklin took over. It is also the first time since 2008 that Georgia has been a regional host. That season, Georgia was also the No. 8 overall seed and the Bulldogs advanced to the College World Series championship game before falling to Fresno State.

The Bulldogs will start Chase Adkins, who enters the game with a 4.12 ERA in 15 starts and holds a 5-0 record. Campbell has not yet announced a starter for the opener. A big reason for the Bulldogs’ turnaround this year has been their pitching staff, which posted its best ERA, 3.78, since 1968. Georgia’s weekend rotation also has included freshman Emerson Hancock and junior Kevin Smith.

Georgia had only one player make First Team All-SEC — senior Keegan McGovern, who led the team in batting average at .325, and home runs with 15. He was second on the team in RBI, behind only Michael Curry, who was named Second Team All-SEC.

Campbell got into the NCAA Tournament by winning the Big South Tournament. The Camels were also the Big South regular-season champions and enter the game with a 35-24 record. Georgia has a 37-19 record and finished third in the SEC, which got 10 teams into the NCAA Tournament.
