Georgia Baseball-Duke: Preview

Based on the way the Athens Regional has played out so far, expect a lot of runs between Georgia and Duke. Georgia has scored double-digit runs in each of its first two regional games, plating 18 against Campbell and then 11 against Troy. In the Troy win, Keegan McGovern and Michael Curry both homered twice for Georgia.

The Bulldogs could be without star third baseman Aaron Schunk, who broke his nose in Sunday’s game. Georgia baseball coach Scott Stricklin said Schunk is day-to-day.

After Duke got shut out in the first game of the regional, the Blue Devils have found their offense. The Blue Devils scored 16 runs against Campbell, including 11 in the ninth inning in which they entered trailing 8-5, and then hung another 15 on Troy on Sunday to advance to the regional final.

The SEC has done well in the NCAA Baseball Tournament so far, as Arkansas, Auburn and Vanderbilt already have locked up spots in the super regionals. The SEC could also see Florida, Mississippi State, South Carolina and Ole Miss join them on Monday, in addition to the Bulldogs. Of the 10 SEC teams to make into the tournament, only LSU and Texas A&M have been eliminated.

Should the Bulldogs win, it will be the first time since 2008 that Georgia has advanced to a super regional. That year, Georgia advanced all the way to the finals of the College World Series.

As for the ACC, regional hosts Clemson and Florida State have already crashed out of the tournament. Louisville was also eliminated on Sunday night. North Carolina is the only ACC team so far to advance to the super regionals.
