Georgia baseball looks to break its longest losing streak of the season at 2 p.m. on Sunday in the series finale at Mississippi State.

The No. 4-ranked UGA program took another loss on the chin on Saturday, falling to MSU by a 9-3 count before the crowd of 9,572 at storied Dudy-Noble Field in Starkville.

It was Georgia’s third consecutive loss.

Mississippi State (35-9, 12-8 SEC) jumped out to a 5-0 lead in handing pitcher Tony Locey (7-1) his first loss of the season and clinching the series over Georgia (33-11, 13-7).

UGA enters Sunday’s game against MSU 1 1/2 games behind SEC East leader Vanderbilt. The Commodores got their second victory in as many days over Auburn, 9-5, on Saturday.

Georgia baseball notes

• Schunk, the team’s leading hitter in SEC action (.355), missed his first game of the year due to a sore Achilles, per UGA’s game notes. Schunk had started 140 consecutive games dating back to 2017, his freshman season.

• With Schunk out, sophomore Cole Tate made his first career start at third base. His only previous start came as a DH against  Kennesaw State on Feb. 27.

• Georgia was 10-0 in games that pitcher Tony Locey started entering into Saturday’s action in Starkville.
