Junior left-hander Kevin Smith was going to make sure that the Bulldogs left Gainesville, Fla., with at least one win as he pitched seven innings of 3-hit ball, allowing only 1 run while striking out 6 Gators as Georgia defeated No. 1 Florida 4-1 on Sunday.

The Bulldogs improved to 35-16 on the season and 16-11 in SEC play.

Four who mattered

Keegan McGovern: The senior outfielder supplied all of the offense the Bulldogs needed with a 3-run home run in the third inning.

C.J. Smith: Smith followed McGovern’s lead by driving in the final run of the game in the fourth inning on an RBI groundout to make the score 4-1.

Aaron Schunk/Ryan Webb: The two relievers each pitched one inning of perfect baseball, sitting down six straight Gators to close out the game.

Worth mentioning

Jumping on early: Florida starting pitcher Jack Leftwich lasted just 4⅔ innings, allowing 4 runs (all earned) on 9 hits and a walk.

What’s next?

The Bulldogs return to Athens on Tuesday as they host Presbyterian at 6 p.m. ET.
