The Georgia Bulldogs (9-0, 6-0 SEC) clinched the SEC East title and a spot in the SEC Championship Game with a 24-10 win over South Carolina on Saturday in Athens. But while Georgia may be undefeated, SEC East champs and No. 1 in the College Football Playoff rankings, it once again came up short of Alabama in the SEC Country Power Poll.

The 2017 SEC Country Power Poll voters placed Georgia in the No. 2 spot behind the Crimson Tide. This is the eighth consecutive week Georgia has been ranked second.

Georgia debuted at No. 1 in the College Football Playoff rankings, which determines the four teams that will play in the College Football Playoff, last Tuesday following a blowout win over Florida. Although the Bulldogs beat South Carolina to move to 9-0, it’s possible Alabama jumps into first place following the Tide’s 24-10 win against LSU. The new CFP rankings will be released Tuesday night.

Georgia’s ground game led it to victory once against South Carolina. The Bulldogs ran for 242 yards, with 102 coming from Nick Chubb and 81 from Sony Michel. But the Georgia passing game also stood out. Jake Fromm passed for 196 yards and 2 touchdowns while completing 73 percent of his passes.

The win over the Gamecocks combined with a Kentucky loss to Ole Miss was enough for Georgia to clinch its first SEC East title since 2012. Despite winning the division, Georgia coach Kirby Smart said there would not be a celebration. With a spot in the College Football Playoff and 12-0 regular-season record on the line, he remains focused on the task at hand: a trip to the Plains this coming Saturday to face the Auburn Tigers.

“There’s not going to be a celebration,” Smart said, according to Chip Towers of DawgNation. “I mean, what’s there to celebrate? We’re going to play Auburn next week and that’s where our focus is. ”

Auburn (7-2, 5-1 SEC) is ranked third in the SEC Country Power Poll.
