The Georgia Bulldogs (12-1, 8-1 SEC) were only ranked first in the SEC Country Power Poll for one week this season, but it was the right week.

Georgia defeated Auburn, 28-7, Saturday in Atlanta to win the SEC Championship and earn a spot in the College Football Playoff. Following the win, the 2017 SEC Country Power Poll voters placed Georgia in the No. 1 spot for the first time this season.

The Bulldogs had been ranked third in the SEC Country Power Poll for three consecutive weeks following their only loss of the season, at Auburn in early November. Before that, they had been ranked second for eight consecutive weeks. Georgia’s lowest ranking all season was fourth in Week 1.

Georgia was ranked No. 3 in the final edition of the College Football Playoff rankings. They’ll face the No. 2 Oklahoma Sooners in the Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day. It will be first time since 1943 Georgia has played in the Rose Bowl and the first time ever it has played Oklahoma.

“It’s great to get Georgia in the CFP, the College Football Playoff, it’s awesome,” Georgia head coach Kirby Smart said Sunday on ESPN’s College Football Playoff selection show. “To go play against another storied program in Oklahoma, I’ve got a tremendous respect for what (Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley) has down out there.”

If the Dawgs beat the Sooners, they’ll face the winner of the Sugar Bowl between No. 1 Clemson and No. 4 Alabama in the national title game on Jan. 8 in Atlanta.
