COCHRAN, Georgia — It was another good day for the Georgia Bulldogs on the recruiting trail, as the Bulldogs secured the services of 5-star offensive tackle Amarius Mims.

Georgia beat out Alabama and Tennessee for Mims. He is the No. 6 overall player in the 247Sports Composite rankings for the class and the No. 2 offensive tackle. He is also the No. 1 overall player in the state of Georgia. If Mims finishes with that ranking, it would be the first time that Georgia landed the No. 1 player in the state under Kirby Smart.

“I just felt comfortable in Athens. I feel comfortable around the coaches, comfortable around the players,” Mims said of his decision. “I feel  like I fit in there.”

Mims is the second 5-star prospect in the class, joining quarterback Brock Vandagriff. The Bulldogs now have the No. 7 class in the country and 16 commitments. Mims is the eighth in-state commitment for the Bulldogs in the cycle. Georgia has commitments from four of the top-10 players in the state of Georgia.

Amarius Mims explains his commitment to Georgia football

Mims is the fourth offensive line commit to join the class, as the Bulldogs also have commitments from Micah Morris, Dylan Fairchild and Jared Wilson. The Bulldogs signed seven offensive linemen in the 2020 class. Mims is the highest committed offensive line prospect that Georgia has landed under Smart.

“Mims and I go way back,” Morris said of his relationship with Georgia’s newest commitment. “Mims and [Terrence Ferguson] and I have all been boys for like at least three years now. We’ve all been the top offensive lineman in Georgia for our class. So we’ve all known each other at camps and on visits. We always speak and laugh and always have a great time together.”

“But as far as him coming to Georgia we definitely want and need Mims at the University of Georgia. I’ve expressed that to him multiple times. With him on one side and me at the other, what more do you want? What more do you need? I just try to lay out the plan for us on the offensive line we could be running everything. Running the show. We could be so great together.”

Landing Mims was a big win for offensive line coach Matt Luke, who took over for former offensive line coach Sam Pittman in December. Following the announcement, a number of Georgia coaches including Luke and Smart reacted to the recruiting win.

A number of Georgia recruits as well celebrated the commitment. Vandagriff played an instrumental role in helping land Mims.

“He didn’t know yet, but he knows now,” Mims said with a big smile on his face about Vandagriff learning of his commitment.

The addition of another 5-star prospect in the class also earned praise from many in the national media to go along with the number of Georgia fans.

For many Georgia fans, they are hoping this is the first win of the week over the Crimson Tide, as the two sides play each other on Saturday. The game is scheduled for an 8 p.m. ET kickoff on CBS. Alabama currently has the No. 1 recruiting class in the country for the 2020 recruiting cycle.
