Some were quick to blame Jacob Eason, Georgia’s starting quarterback as a freshman last season, for the Bulldogs’ offensive struggles in 2016. CBS Sports analyst Gary Danielson sees it differently.

Danielson said he thinks Georgia’s offensive woes were caused by every position but quarterback.

“I was shocked at the lack of talent that surrounded Jacob Eason last year,” Danielson said on a CBS season-opening conference call on Thursday. “I think the least of their problems is at quarterback. … They need to get better at the other 10 positions.”

In his first season at Georgia, Eason threw for 2,430 yards, 16 touchdowns and 8 interceptions. The Bulldogs finished 8-5 and averaged 24.5 points per game, which ranked 102nd out of 128 FBS teams.

However, Danielson didn’t blame Eason, stating that the Bulldogs lacked talent at wide receiver. He added that Georgia “better take significant strides forward this year.”

Danielson’s comments came as a rebuttal to fellow CBS analyst Rick Neuheisel, who said Eason needs to make some improvements to boost the Bulldogs’ offense.

“I think he just has to kind of grow into the position and become more calculating, more mentally prepared for all that happens,” Neuheisel said. “For the team to take the next step and be more viable as an offense, because you have to imagine a Kirby Smart team is going to be strong on defense … I think it all comes down to Eason.”
