Coaching rumors: Georgia Southern hires Georgia support staff member Olten Downs
Georgia has already seen a couple of members of its staff bolt for coaching opportunities at other schools, and now another one is headed to Georgia Southern.
According to a report from Rusty Mansell of 247Sports, Georgia’s Assistant Director of Player Development Olten Downs will be leaving to become the safeties coach on Tyson Summer’s staff at Georgia Southern. Two other members of the Georgia support staff had previously left to take jobs at Florida International after the season.
Downs joined the Georgia staff in 2015 after coaching in the high school ranks at Creekside High School in Fairburn.
Downs was the defensive coordinator for Georgia running backs coach Dell McGee when McGee was the head coach at Carver-Columbus High School from 2006-10. McGee joined Smart’s staff after serving as Georgia Southern’s interim head coach and running backs coach last season.
The Bulldogs have not seen any on-field coaches depart the school this offseason.
