Justin Fields is moving on from Georgia. We learned of that news as DawgNation Daily was concluding today, and stayed on the air to react to Fields’ decision to head to Ohio State. That bonus podcast can be found here.

Ultimately, I think UGA fans should wish Fields well as he departs. His chapter at Georgia didn’t end the way fans wanted, but players want to play and the Bulldogs will probably be fine without him.

He undoubtedly has a special skill set and it was one that UGA fans — me included — were looking forward to watching grow and develop at Sanford Stadium. Now that it’s become obvious that won’t happen, the immediate question becomes: What happens next?

There’s no shortage of coverage about what this means for Georgia on the field, but it’s probably also appropriate to examine what this means for the fans in the stands and the faction of DawgNation that enjoys commenting online.

Quarterbacks are seemingly leaders by nature, and leaders have a way of cultivating followers — among fellow players and among fans.

When UGA brought in another 5-star quarterback on the heels of established-starter Jake Fromm’s freshman season, it could be that a so-called “controversy” was going to be unavoidable. It’s almost as if the presence of Fields suggested  Fromm might be lacking in some regard. Otherwise, why was Fields here?

And to be sure, the brief glimpses we got of Fields was enough for some to decide they preferred him over Fromm. However, Fromm was the coaches’ choice all along — a fact that doesn’t sit well with everyone.

Now, DawgNation needs to to the work of uniting once again and rallying around the players who still want to be at UGA.

It’s a lot more fun when everyone is rooting for the same thing, and next season maybe that can be true once again.

I discuss more about these issues in today’s bonus podcast.
