Georgia football podcast: Analyst explains why UGA has all it needs to win national championship

Beginning of the show: Recruiting is the lifeblood of college football. It’s essentially impossible to win at a high level without elite talent.

A college football analyst named Bud Elliott from 247Sports has attempted to quantify the precise definition of what “elite” means when it comes to prospects. Elliott calls this the “Blue-Chip Ratio.”

Elliott’s “blue chips” are former four and five-star signees, and according to Elliott, “to win the national championship, college football teams need to sign more four- and five-star recruits (aka “Blue Chips”) than two- and three-star players over the previous four recruiting classes. This has been true basically as far back as modern internet recruiting rankings have existed.”

UGA is second in the Blue-Chip Ratio with 82 percent former four and five-star recruits on its roster — just behind No. 1 Alabama at 83 percent.

I’ll explain on today’s show why the obvious good news about UGA’s standing among other programs from a talent perspective also comes with a possible downside as well.
