Georgia football podcast: Kirby Smart has a plan to combat UGA’s No. 1 off-field foe

Beginning of the show: Hype is growing around Georgia, and Kirby Smart has a plan to keep UGA players from buying into it. I’ll explain on the Wednesday show what that plan is and why it’s likely to work.

10-minute mark: I share audio of Vanderbilt coach Derek Mason saying he’s not fooled by Smart’s decision to not yet name a starting quarterback for the game Saturday between the Bulldogs and the Commodores. I’ll share Smart’s response to Mason’s comments.

15-minute mark: SEC Country’s Mike Johnson joins the show. Some of the topics covered include:

  • What’s next for UGA at quarterback
  • Smart comparing the UGA defense to Erk Russell’s “Junkyard Dawgs” earlier this week
  • What is meant when UGA coaches and players discuss a “culture change”
  • Why tough practices are helping the Bulldogs
  • And whether UGA and Auburn are emerging as serious threats to Alabama in the SEC

30-minute mark: I take a look at other SEC headlines, including whether former Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops should be considered a candidate for future openings around the conference, why Tennessee fans apparently are ready for a quarterback change, and a reminder the first College Football Playoff rankings are just a few weeks away.

35-minute mark: Former UGA quarterback David Greene joins the show to preview the game with Vanderbilt and to talk about an autograph signing next Saturday in Athens, Ga.

End of show: I address some interesting notes from Jeff Sentell in a recent Sentell’s Intel column regarding 5-star quarterback Justin Fields.
