Georgia football podcast: UGA’s ‘retaliation’ leads to roses

Beginning of the show: Georgia was motivated to avenge its only loss of the season in the SEC Championship Game and to provide a strong response to Auburn coach Gus Malzahn, who boasted on the field after the teams’ first meeting. The Bulldogs did that and more on Saturday as UGA earned a College Football Playoff berth for the first time and received an invitation to its first Rose Bowl since 1943. I’ll talk more about the significance of UGA’s victory against the Tigers on the Monday show.

15-minute mark: DawgNation’s Chip Towers joins the show. Some of the topics covered include:

  • UGA buying into the “DawgNation Retaliation” theme
  • The game plan designed by offensive coordinator Jim Chaney and its near-perfect execution vs. Auburn
  • The postseason accolades that are beginning to arrive for UGA linebacker Roquan Smith
  • Some questionable calls that went against UGA in the first half Saturday
  • The Bulldogs’ upcoming trip to the Rose Bowl
  • And some thoughts on UGA wide receiver Jayson Stanley and linebacker Natrez Patrick’s brush with the law Saturday night

30-minute mark: I take a look at some other SEC headlines including Alabama being granted the final playoff spot, Malzahn turning down an offer from Arkansas to sign a contract extension at Auburn, some thoughts on Phillip Fulmer becoming Tennessee athletic director, and Texas A&M’s over-the-top welcome for new coach Jimbo Fisher.

35-minute mark: I’ll share audio of UGA quarterback Jake Fromm’s humorous description of D’Andre Swift’s 64-yard touchdown run.

End of show: I update the Gator Hater Countdown.
