Georgia Basketball-Savannah State preview

Friday’s game will be the first regular-season game of the Tom Crean era at Georgia. After his previous stops at Indiana and Marquette, Crean took last year off from coaching and worked as a broadcaster for ESPN.

While Crean does lose former SEC Player of the Year Yante Maten from last year’s team, he brings back a number of contributors, especially in the backcourt. Georgia brings back three starters from last year’s team in senior guard Turtle Jackson, sophomore forward Rayshaun Hammonds and senior center Derek Ogbeide. Hammonds was the team’s top player in Georgia’s two preseason exhibition games, as the he averaged 11.5 points and 9.0 rebounds.

Sophomore forward Nicolas Claxton also figures to take on a bigger role this year after impressing with in a smaller role last season. He figures to absorb much of Maten’s old role. Junior guards Tyree Crump and Jordan Harris also figure to have bigger roles this year.

After hosting Savannah State on Friday, the Bulldogs return to action on Tuesday, when UGA visits the Temple Owls. Georgia then returns home next Friday to host Sam Houston State. The first 1,000 Georgia students at the game will receive a free Georgia basketball T-shirt.
