Georgia’s preseason camp is well underway now: Kirby Smart and his staff have led the team through eight practices, including one open to the public at Sanford Stadium. And there’s plenty to discuss from your two DawgNation reporters on the ground in Athens, Seth Emerson and Chip Towers.

While there’s no overriding quarterback competition, as there was the previous two years, and there’s no newness to the coaching staff, as there was last year, this is still a team looking to improve on a disappointing season, and with plenty of concerns that need to be addressed.

How does the offensive line improve? Will any wide receivers emerge as a top target for Jacob Eason? Come to think of it, how much (if any) will Eason improve from his freshman season?

It’s not just that side of the ball: Does the defense go from good to great this year? Who wins the one vacant starting position? And of course after last year’s struggles on special teams, questions abound there: Does Rodrigo Blankenship hold off David Marvin for the place-kicking job, and does Marshall Long hold off Cameron Nizialek for the punting job?

So many questions. How quickly will there be answers, or will there be answers at all before the season?

Chip and Seth are well ready with their observations on what they’ve seen thus far.

Some of what Chip and Seth discuss:

– The offensive line juggling, and how the unit could look in the short term, but also as the season goes on. How have the freshman looked so far, and which ones will figure into this year’s plans?

– Jacob Eason’s maturation at quarterback: What he’s clearly learned from last year, how Jake Fromm’s presence has pushed him, and what Eason still needs to improve on.

– The defense, and whether it can go from good to great. Chip is a bit more optimistic about seeing a return of the Junkyard Dog defense. Seth still has some concerns.

This will be the first of a weekly series of discussions from your intrepid beat writers. Hope you enjoy, and hope you tune in again next week!
