Vanderbilt coach Derek Mason was visibly upset on the sideline Saturday night when a Georgia fan blew a whistle in the stands.
On second down late in the first quarter, a whistle sounded after the snap, and Vanderbilt’s players appeared to think the play might have been blown dead. Mason was later seen complaining to the officials about the confusion, and the head referee had to make an announcement regarding the incident.
“Can the public address announcer please notify the crowd that they can not blow whistles from the stands?” the referee requested.
ESPN sideline reporter Cole Cubelic confirmed hearing the unofficial whistle as well, so it was definitely audible on the field.
Mason’s anger didn’t go unnoticed by the broadcast crew or viewers at home. However, fans had some varied reactions to his actions.
