DN90: UGA fans continue to anticipate Todd Gurley’s Atlanta Falcons debut

There are some Georgia fans who think the home-state NFL team hasn’t done enough over the years to bring in former Bulldogs players to its roster.

Those that feel that way — along with every other UGA fan — had reason to celebrate this offseason when Atlanta announced it had signed former UGA running back Todd Gurley.

Gurley’s coach at UGA, Mark Richt, spoke for many of those fans when he tweeted about the Falcons addition of Gurley back in March.

“If I’m a Falcons fan or a Georgia fan I’m jumping for joy right now,” Richt said. “Welcome back Todd Gurley!”

Gurley isn’t originally from Georgia. He grew up in Tarboro, N.C., but Gurley is closely associated with The Peach State due to his success playing for UGA from 2012-14.

Gurley was an All-SEC performer in 2012 and 2013, and he remains one of the most popular Bulldogs players in recent history.

This was true even before he became a top NFL running back — including winning Rookie of the Year and becoming a two-time All-Pro.

Gurley — who celebrated a birthday this week — still has strong ties to his former college program. He even made a brief cameo appearance in four-star UGA running back signee Kendall Milton’s commitment video last July.

Now he’s back in the state where he played college football, but he’s playing for more than just the fans that cheered him while at UGA.

The Falcons are beginning the process of training camp while also attempting to manage the coronavirus. Gurley spoke with reporters about that process this week and offered a strong response in particular regarding his lack of selfish ambitions.

“You must not have watched one of my interviews for the last five years,” Gurley told a reporter. “I don’t do personal goals.”

Gurley made it clear he wants to get back to the Super Bowl — a game he played in with his old team, the Los Angeles Rams, in 2018.

The Falcons might seem like they’re a long way from that goal after only posting a 7-9 record in 2019, but the presence of Gurley — if he’s healthy — could be a catalyst for improvement.
