Georgia-Alabama picks and predictions for the 2018 National Championship Game

Picks are made by members of the SEC Country breaking news staff.

Connor Riley: This will be the best rushing offense Alabama has seen all season. This will be the best rushing defense Georgia has seen all season. Georgia has rushed for at least 185 yards in all but one of its games this season. The one it didn’t was a loss. I just have a tough time seeing how Georgia is going to get to 185-rushing yards against this Alabama defense, which has not given up that many yards on the ground all season.

Score: Alabama 17, Georgia 13

Joe Clarkin: As good as Georgia’s running game is, Alabama’s rush defense is better, even with all of the injuries they’ve had at linebacker. Combine that with the fact that Alabama has been here before — we know Saban will have them ready to play — and I think we’ll see the Tide impose their will and pull away in the second half. Kirby Smart is going to win a national championship at Georgia, but it won’t be in 2018.

Score: Alabama 28, Georgia 17

Corey Knapp: Special teams always come up in big games and again will be a crucial factor in this one, more so with the players who are kicking rather than returning. Georgia likely has the placekicking advantage over Alabama, but both have outstanding punters, and in a defensive-leaning game, field position will be critical. If one team gets a lead and extends it by a field goal or another touchdown, its strong defense will make a multi-score comeback very difficult, especially if it forces the opposing offense to become one-dimensional. Of course this game will be a battle of two supreme defenses, but the efficiency of both offenses will put the final score more in the range of the mid-to-upper 20s rather than teens. In a very tight game, Georgia makes one more play than Alabama to win the title.

Spenser Davis: Georgia will have the built-in advantage of having the best player on the field (Roquan Smith) when it faces Alabama on Monday night. UGA’s biggest question mark, freshman quarterback Jake Fromm, proved to be more of an asset than a liability in its overtime victory over Oklahoma in the Rose Bowl. Sony Michel and Nick Chubb is the country’s best running back duo in recent memory. But despite all of that, Alabama is still the evil empire. And the student (Kirby Smart) doesn’t quite have the firepower to dethrone the master (Nick Saban) — at least not yet.

Score: Alabama 28, Georgia 24

Brian Stultz: fter the way that Georgia came back against Oklahoma in the Rose Bowl, I wouldn’t put anything past this team, and from all accounts, this will be a home game for the Dawgs in Atlanta. The rushing combination of Chubb and Michel will try to wear down the Crimson Tide defense, while Jake Fromm looks like a 4th-year senior. However, this is Nick Saban and Alabama, and no one is better in big games than the Crimson Tide coach. It will be close, but the Tide will make a few more plays behind Jalen Hurts and the defense and pull it out in the end.

Score: Alabama 27, Georgia 24
