Yante Maten had a great week for Georgia basketball as he put up two monster performances and led Georgia to two key nonconference wins. And now he’s being given some recognition for his efforts.

The senior forward was named the SEC Player of the Week after Georgia wins over Georgia Tech and Temple. In the two games, Maten averaged 27 points and 9 rebounds, and he poured in a season-high 30 points against Temple.

Heading into conference play, Maten is living up to predictions; he was named co-SEC Player of the Year in the preseason. He’s averaging a career-best 20.2 points per game and 9.3 rebounds. He’s also shooting over 40 percent on his 3-point attempts and a career[best 85.5 percent from the free throw line.

Maten is a big reason Georgia has gotten off to a 9-2 start on the season. The Bulldogs begin SEC play on Sunday, when they will meet Kentucky on the road. The game will be played in Rupp Arena and air on ESPN. Tip is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET. A win over the No. 16-ranked Wildcats, who also have to play rival Louisville on Friday, would be a huge boost to Georgia’s postseason hopes. Georgia has not made the NCAA Tournament since Maten was a freshman.

Georgia will make its home SEC debut against Ole Miss on Jan. 3.
