How Georgia can prevent Clemson-Alabama part V from happening

The fifth Star Wars movie that was made, Attack of the Clones, was bad. Rocky V was dreadful.  The fifth Die Hard movie had Hans Gruber rolling over in his grave. With the exception of Fast Five and Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, the fifth installment of any series is rarely better than any of the previous entries.

This is one of just a few of the reasons why Georgia has to prevent Clemson-Alabama V from happening.

Many in the national media are already penciling the Crimson Tide and Tigers to meet in New Orleans for next season’s national championship game. They both have the best odds to win it all, with Georgia and Ohio State coming in as a distant third. Clemson brings back Trevor Lawrence — who might end up being the best quarterback prospect of all-time by the time he enters the NFL draft  — while Alabama still has Tua Tagovialoa, who nearly won the Heisman this year.

I’m not here to tell you that Clemson-Alabama V would be bad for college football. But the sport is a little less fun when its the same two schools playing every year. And the Bulldogs figure to have as good a shot at preventing the Tigers and Crimson Tide from meeting in a fifth consecutive year.

First, Alabama is in all likelihood going to have to beat Georgia to win the SEC and get into the College Football Playoff. While Nick Saban’s team didn’t have to do that in 2017, more often than not that is going to be the case.

Georgia and Ohio State also figure to be the only two teams that have the talent to match-up with Clemson and Alabama. Of course for all that talent, the Bulldogs have still found new ways to lose to LSU and Texas, while Ohio State lost to Purdue by four touchdowns.

UGA brings back a ton of talent next year, including quarterback Jake Fromm, running back D’Andre Swift and most of its offensive line. The front 7 only figures to get better as linebackers Adam Anderson and Channing Tindall get another year of experience. Georgia is also bringing in a 5-star prospect at the following positions: Wide receiver, center, defensive tackle, defensive end and inside linebacker.

For Kirby Smart and company to prevent America from having to watch Clemson-Alabama again, it just has to make small improvements. It has to show up for a road game against an SEC West team with a Tiger mascot (it didn’t do that this year against LSU). Georgia can’t keep running fake punts and fake field goals, as Alabama even showed in the national title game how dumb those can be.

Georgia doesn’t have to be perfect to win a national title and take down either (or very likely both) of these teams. This was the first time in the five-year history of the playoff that an unbeaten team took home the title. And none of the five No. 1 seeds entering the College Football Playoff have ever won the championship. But Georgia, pretty clearly, has to improve to do so.

People tend to get tired of seeing sequels. Seeing John McClane hanging off the side off a building, as great as it was the first time, gets pretty bland eventually. Fans — and Georgia fans in particular — are very much tired of seeing the same thing over and over again. Clemson-Alabama V wouldn’t bring the same kind of excitement as say a Georgia-Ohio State matchup.

So here’s to hoping that his time next year college football fans get to see something new, instead of seeing Nick Saban scowl and Dabo Swinney talk about still being an underdog.

Two former Bulldogs voice support for James Coley

With Jim Chaney now officially leaving Georgia, Kirby Smart and company are looking for a new offensive coordinator. And two former Bulldogs have voiced their support for a candidate.

Both Randy McMichael and Terrence Edwards took to Twitter on Wednesday to praise James Coley, who was Georgia’s co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Georgia this past season.

McMichael was a long-time tight end in the NFL after a standout career for the Bulldogs, while Edwards is still the Bulldogs’ only wide receiver to have a season with over 1,000 yards.

Coley has been with Georgia since Kirby Smart first arrived in 2016, as Coley spent his first two seasons as the wide receivers coach. Last offseason, Texas A&M made a very aggressive offer to Coley to be the offensive coordinator for the Aggies and Jimbo Fisher. Coley decided to remain in Athens and was named the co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He also received a pay bum, and made $850,000 last season.

As we wrote on Wednesday, Coley must be viewed as the favorite for the opening. He previously served as Miami’s offensive coordinator from 2013-15, where he also called plays. He worked as Florida State’s offensive coordinator from 2010-12, but did not have play calling duties. Coley is also one of Georgia’s best recruiters, especially with regards to the South Florida area. He played a key role in recently bringing in 4-star defensive back Tyrique Stevenson.
