Georgia football has three future games scheduled against Clemson in 2024, 2029, 2030, 2032 and 2033. And now the Bulldogs and Tigers will meet much earlier than that.
Georgia football confirmed a report by Brett McMurphy of Stadium that the Bulldogs and Clemson will open the 2021 season in Charlotte.
“This is another great opportunity to schedule a national non-conference game with a top level opponent,” Kirby Smart said. “Playing a regular season game in Charlotte will give our fans the opportunity for a completely new experience in a great city and top level stadium. I know our coaches and players will be excited for the challenge to kick off the season in this kind of environment.”
Georgia and Clemson last met in 2014, with Georgia winning 45-21. The 2024 matchup is set to be played in Atlanta, while the 2029 game will be in Clemson and the 2030 game will be in Athens.
Georgia had previously had a game against San Jose State scheduled for Sept. 4, but the Clemson game has replaced that now.
Clemson does have four non-conference games already scheduled for the 2021 season as does Georgia. However, both schools do not have a Power five opponent on the schedule other than their annual in-state rivalry game against South Carolina and Georgia Tech.
In recent years Clemson and Georgia have been two of the top teams in the country. Clemson has won two national titles since 2016 while Georgia played for the 2018 National Championship game. Georgia landed the No. 1 signing class in the 2020 cycle while Clemson landed the No. 3 overall class.

The two schools are located less than 80 miles apart. Of Georgia’s annual opponents, only Georgia Tech is closer than Clemson.
Georgia has made it a point to add more marquee non-conference games to its schedule, as the Bulldogs have future games against Oregon, Texas, Florida State, Oklahoma and Ohio State on the schedule.
When speaking last year, Clemson coach Dabo Swinney made it a point to say that he would like to see Georgia on the schedule more often.
“We should play Georgia every year if it was up to me,” Swinney said. “We’re 80 miles, and they need a game, we need a game. We had to travel to Texas A&M last year, when we could have gone 80 miles.”
Georgia opens the 2020 season against an ACC foe in Virginia. That game will also be played on a neutral site, as the two teams will play in Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
