Former Georgia great David Andrews announces he’ll be returning to football in 2020
The New England Patriots greatly missed center David Andrews during the 2019 season, as he missed the season due to blood clots. Andrews was hospitalized back in August with reports being that blood clots formed in his lungs.
But Andrews delivered some great news on Thursday night, as he announced on his Instagram page that he’ll be able to return to football this coming season.
“During this time there has been a lot of time for reflection on the past, present and future,” Andrews wrote. “As to the future I’m excited that I’ll have the opportunity to play the game I love again. When and whatever the nfl season looks like I’m just thankful that I’ll be able to get back to competing with my teammates and coaches. Go pats.”
While the NFL draft is likely to overshadow Andrews’ announcement, the former Georgia standout likely isn’t a big fan of the festivities. After a stellar career at Georgia, Andrews went undrafted in the 2015 NFL Draft.
During his time at Georgia, he was a three-year starter and key for the Bulldogs.
Andrews though signed with the New England Patriots and immediately emerged as a starting center for the Patriots right away. Since joining the Patriots he’s played in three Super Bowls, winning two of them.
When speaking at Super Bowl LIII, he drew strong praise from New England coach Bill Belichick.
“David’s a good center. He’s played center his whole life. He played center in junior high, he played center in high school, he played center in college and he’s playing center here,” Belichick said . “I would say he’s very comfortable with all of the things that come with that position. I can’t imagine there’s anything that he sees at this point in his career that he hasn’t already seen multiple times, if not hundreds of times, in one way or another. He’s very experienced and he’s very adept at handling variations of all of the things that I just mentioned. He’s a lifetime – he’s a career center and he plays like it.”
Andrews will be snapping to a new quarterback as Tom Brady is now the quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Patriots have Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer on the roster but are in the market for drafting a quarterback, such as Georgia’s Jake Fromm.
