Georgia football: Davin Bellamy is one of the SEC’s best run-stoppers on the edge

This stat proves Davin Bellamy’s run-stopping prowess
The Pro Football Focus College Twitter feed tweets out a ton of great information about college football players. On Saturday, the account tweeted some cool info about one of Georgia’s best defenders, outside linebacker Davin Bellamy.
According to PFF, Bellamy is the SEC’s top returning edge defender in terms of run stops. Bellamy finished last season with 21 run stops, one more than Kentucky’s edge defender extraordinaire, Denzil Ware. Among more traditional stats, Bellamy collected 51 tackles, 25 solo tackles, 9 tackles for loss and 5 sacks. He and Lorenzo Carter make up one of the linebacker duos in the SEC.
But while Carter made the All-SEC third-team, Bellamy didn’t receive any All-SEC accolades. And that supposed snub is providing him with a bit of extra motivation. According to Jason Butt of The (Macon, Ga.) Telegraph, Bellamy said being left off the All-SEC team last year is driving him to perform in the upcoming campaign.
“I thought I should have been on them,” Bellamy said. “But you don’t do it for the fame. It just gave me more motivation to go out there and prove people wrong.”

A rare Jim Chaney appearance
We got our semi-annual peek into the mind of offensive coordinator Jim Chaney last weekend. He spoke to the media for the first of only two times this season — the other comes before the bowl game — and he talked of an offseason spent “soul-searching” and Kirby Smart’s pivot toward focusing on more spread concepts.
“But we all know the spread element has taken over college football, and being able to make looser plays, and making it harder on defenses to defend is much better,” Smart said. “Between those two things you want to have balance. You want to get your football players the football. Who are the best guys with the ball in their hands? Who are the best blockers in space to get those guys the ball?”
Will Jake Fromm redshirt?
With Jacob Eason firmly entrenched as the No. 1 quarterback on the roster and Brice Ramsey returning for his senior season to add some extra depth in the QB pecking order, there’s a chance freshman Jake Fromm could redshirt this season. But Smart isn’t putting the cart before the horse, and he demurred this weekend when asked about the possibility of Fromm sitting this season.
“As of today he’s one play away from playing,” Smart said of Fromm. “We don’t think like that. We don’t think like, ‘Oh we’re going to redshirt this guy or this set of guys.’ I don’t think that’s the way to look at it. I think it’s to say, ‘Can Jake continue to grow at the rate that he’s growing? Can he make decisions, make the throws that we want him to make? Can he run the offense, execute the offense and lead the offense in the right way?’ If he continues to do those things, then he’s competing for everything. Not just who’s the backup.”

Terrell Davis call the Dawgs
Former Georgia Bulldogs running back Terrell Davis was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday, and he made sure to recognize his alma mater in his induction speech. Like any DGD would, Davis called the Dawgs from the stage in Canton, Ohio.
