COVID-19 is going to disrupt the Georgia football program in some way this season. In the past week alone, we’ve seen LSU, Clemson and Texas all announce that double-digit members of their team have tested positive for the disease, putting a two week stop on at this point, just voluntary workouts.
Teams can begin to move into the required workout phase starting on July 13, but that won’t stop a positive test and the two-week quarantine that comes with it. As evidenced in LSU’s case, college kids are still going to be college kids and try and visit bars, as ill-advised as that might be.
This season is going to be anything but normal and a few teams will be better able to handle the difficulties that come with it than others. As usual, those teams are the ones at the top of the food chain, the most elite teams in the country. And it will be because of their superior depth.
Georgia will certainly be one of the teams that can use its depth to its advantage this coming fall. The Bulldogs return a number of key contributors at various positions, like outside linebacker and in the defensive backfield.
And one other place where that will be true is at the quarterback position, thanks to the additions of Jamie Newman and JT Daniels this offseason. Georgia hasn’t always been great about having depth at this position, but the Bulldogs will have that in 2020 and that could end up making the difference at the end of the season.
