ATHENS — Georgia coach Kirby Smart said his Bulldogs are “a beat up football team” that have plenty of room to get better during the off week.

Tailback Kenny McIntosh, receiver Matt Landers and cornerback DJ Daniel are among the key players who need to get healthy this week.

“We’re a beat up football team,” Smart said on his Tuesday Zoom call. “We have some guys that have got to get well, but have a lot of guys that have to get better.”

The No. 4-ranked Bulldogs are coming off a 41-24 loss to No. 2 Alabama and do not play next Saturday, their game with Kentucky moved back a week on account of the SEC office’s rescheduling plan to accommodate league teams battling COVID-19 issues.

McIntosh ranks third in the nation in kick return average (36.3) and  is one of the most versatile and explosive running backs on the team.

“Kenny banged up his knee early in the game,” said Smart, addressing an injury that occurred after McIntosh’s second kick return. “ We don’t think he’s going to be out long …. He’ll be in a black (non-contact) jersey at least today.”

Smart said that cornerback DJ Daniel, who started 11 games last season but has seen limited time in the past two games, also has been slowed.

“DJ has been battling an ankle and it’s been bothering him,” Smart said. “He’s practiced, he’s done everything we have asked, he’s trying to get better.

“We’re hopeful he gets back to 100 percent and gest back to playing at the level he was playing at last year.”

Receiver Matt Landers, the team’s third leading returning receiver, missed the Alabama game after suffering what Smart said was a shoulder injury against Tennessee.

Defensive tackle Devonte Wyatt was not in the starting lineups and saw limited snaps against Alabama.

Smart said Georgia will practice Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday this week and have some physical and scrimmage activity.

“Trying to get fundamentally better and focus on us, not really opponents, and things we can get better at,” Smart said. “We have a lot of guys who probably haven’t gotten to play the number of snaps that we’d like, in terms of the teams we’ve played, the tight games we’ve had to play. We’ve got to get those guys better. It starts today.”
