ATHENS — Georgia has the look of a healthy football team midway through the week.
The receiver trio of Terry Godwin, Jayson Stanley and Kearis Jackson went through Wednesday’s early drills at full speed, showing no after-effects of the injuries that prevented them from playing against Austin Peay.
Defensive back Tyrique McGhee came out to practice late, an indication he might still be limited on account of the broken bone he suffered in his foot in Georgia’s Aug. 11 scrimmage.
McGhee was, however, in full gear with both ankles taped.
“We’re hoping he’ll be able to play,” Georgia coach Kirby Smart said Tuesday. “I don’t think we’ll know until closer to the end of the week.”
Smart used 83 players in the Bulldogs’ season-opening game, but the travel squad for SEC games is limited to 70, so there will be some difficult decisions ahead.
Smart said he didn’t plan on making a decision on the previously injured receivers until Thursday.
Godwin is coming back from a knee injury that sidelined him the first week of fall drills, and a calf strain that prevented him from playing against Austin Peay.
Smart said Stanley has overcome his quad injury, and Jackson is nearly all the way back from the tight hamstring that has plagued him in fall camp.
“We’ll have to figure out the right 70 to take based on special teams, depth, how many of those receivers can play If all of them can play,” Smart said on Tuesday. “We’ll take whatever it takes, maybe nine, 10 or 11.”
Smart said following the Austin Peay game he was most concerned about the depth in the secondary, placing a premium on McGhee’s status.
“We need depth in the secondary,” Smart said. “If we were to lose somebody [else] in the secondary it’d be scary. So we need guys to be ready to play.”
