ATHENS — Georgia football released its updated roster on Tuesday, and there weren’t many surprises.

At least, not yet.

Georgia has to get down to 85 players on scholarship by the start of fall classes, and the current roster reflects 89, so attrition is a given.

The school announced in-person classes will begin on Aug. 20.

The in-person classes will conclude at the Thanksgiving Break. The remaining coursework and final exams will take place online. The exams are set for the week of Dec. 11-17.

All 25 of the Bulldogs’ 2020 signees are reflected on the roster, along with transfers Jamie Newman (QB), JT Daniels (QB), Austin Kirksey (QB) and Tre’ McKitty (TE).

The newcomers do not have numbers listed yet.

Three UGA players who at one point were in the NCAA transfer portal to explore their options — Robert Beal (LB), Prather Hudson (RB) and John Seter (QB) — are all listed on the roster.

Redshirt senior offensive guard Ben Cleveland, who was academically ineligible for the Sugar Bowl and did not travel to New Orleans, per a 247Sports report, is also listed on the roster.

The Georgia attrition could happen even before the Bulldogs begin supervised workouts in July and position groups sort themselves out.

The team is currently in voluntary workouts being supervised by the UGA strength and conditioning staff.

The lack of a spring football practice session likely delayed some players transferring out of the program.

Their preference would be to attain a spot on the depth chart to their liking rather than go through the ordeal and uncertainty as changing schools.

The quarterback room is particularly busy with five quarterbacks added to the room since the Sugar Bowl.

Three-year starter Jake Fromm has of course departed since then, while the following have entered the program:

• Newman (Wake Forest grad transfer)

• JT Daniels (USC transfer, seeking waiver for 2020 eligibility)

• Carson Beck (incoming freshman early enrolled)

• Jackson Muschamp (preferred walk-on)

• Austin Kirksey (transfer from Nevada, preferred walk-on)

Quarterback D’Wan Mathis was on the roster last season, but he wasn’t cleared to play in games. Mathis had a cyst on his brain removed in May of 2019, and it wasn’t until a recent  MRI last month that he was cleared for full contact.

Redshirt junior Stetson Bennett is also on the roster, as is the aforementioned Seter and Nathan Priestley.
