Georgia-Mississippi State: Live updates

Georgia-Mississippi State preview

3. Can Georgia slow down Nick Fitzgerald?

Mississippi State quarterback Nick Fitzgerald is one of the more dynamic players in the country. In three games, Fitzgerald has accounted for 12 touchdowns, 7 passing and 5 rushing. It’s also a homecoming of sorts for Fitzgerald, as he is from Richmond Hill, located just outside of Savannah. Georgia showed it could slow down dual threat quarterbacks when it held Notre Dame’s Brandon Wimbush to just 19 points, but Fitzgerald represents a tougher task.

2. Does Todd Grantham get his revenge?

During his time in Athens, former Georgia defensive Todd Grantham wasn’t exactly a beloved figure, and a number of Georgia fans were more than happy to see him replaced by Jeremy Pruitt. Now Grantham returns, this time as the defensive coordinator for Mississippi State. In his first three games as the Bulldogs DC, Grantham’s defense has given up just 26 points. And last week he slowed LSU and star running back Derrius Guice to just 7 points.

Georgia will also be getting a visit from Jonathan Abram, a former Georgia defensive back, who ultimately transferred after Pruitt was not retained by Kirby Smart. Abram had some strong words for Georgia earlier this week.

“To get a chance to go between the hedges but on the opposite side … I mean, I just look forward to going in with my team and, honestly, just beating the brakes off of them,” Abram said.

1.Who plays at quarterback and how well do they play

Jacob Eason did return to practice this week, but his status is still up in the air as to whether or not he will be available thisi week. All signs point to freshman Jake Fromm getting the start. This will be his first SEC game, but Fromm already has a road win over Notre Dame under his belt.

And for what it’s worth, Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen has spent much of the week raving about Fromm.

“You see a lot of what you look for in a quarterback. You can see it he has that competitive swagger,” Mullen said. “They do a really good job of not putting the game always on his shoulders. He has that leadership and that attitude that you look for at the quarterback position.”
