ATHENS — William Ham began the season as Georgia’s starting place-kicker. He finished it seeing the writing on the wall, and thus has decided to walk away again, this time for good.

Ham has decided to quit football and just be a regular student at UGA, he told the Macon Telegraph on Tuesday. Ham would have had two years of eligibility remaining if he stayed on the team.

The news has no effect on Georgia’s scholarship limit of 85, as Ham was a walk-on.

“I’m moving on from football,” Ham, a native of Macon told The Telegraph. “That’s all set in stone with the coaches. I’ve got other opportunities down the road academically with some hobbies of mine that I’m willing to pursue.”

This is the second time Ham has quit the team. He was with the Bulldogs while redshirting in 2014, then sat out the next year. He opted to return this past spring, and competed with redshirt freshman Rodrigo Blankenship for the starting place-kicker job.

Ham won the job at first, but struggled out of the gate: He was 3-for-7 on field goals, his longest a 29-yarder, though he did make all his extra points. Blankenship replaced him and ran away with the job.

Ham also kicked off 12 times this year, averaging 59.8 yards per kickoff.
