ATHENS — The Georgia football team was doing its best to squeeze in practice on Tuesday night, as threatening skies loomed overhead. They held off during the media viewing period, which yielded a couple tidbits on closely-watched players.

Quarterback Jacob Eason was throwing on the side for a few minutes, and at one point a trainer came over to rub his right, throwing shoulder. That was after a drill in which Eason and the other quarterbacks were making deep throws. Eason stretched the arm a bit, made some short throws on the side for a few minutes, then re-joined the other quarterbacks for drills.

It didn’t appear too serious, but it was also obvious that at least for a few minutes the freshman quarterback’s shoulder was bothering him.

Going by the schedule, this practice would have been Eason’s turn to take most of the first-team snaps. It’s practice number nine, with Greyson Lambert, Brice Ramsey and then Eason getting every third day.

The other tidbit concerns Tyler Catalina, the graduate transfer who has been expected to contend for a starting spot at left or right tackle. But going by one drill during Tuesday’s practice, Catalina was actually working on the third team, at left tackle. He had been working second team in the same drill the rest of the preseason. Aulden Bynum was working second team in Catalina’s place.

The requisite cautionary note: This is from a fairly limited media viewing period. Head coach Kirby Smart is due to meet the media after Wednesday’s practice.

Otherwise, things appeared to be status quo on the injury front:

  • Sophomore inside linebacker Natrez Patrick, a projected starter, was running on the side for a second straight day. Roquan Smith was again with the first team linebackers.
  • Junior nose tackle John Atkins, another projected starter, continues to miss practice with a hyper-extended knee. But he was using the exercise bike early in practice.
  • Junior tailback Sony Michel was also still working with the tailbacks during play polish and individual drills. Michel, working his way back from a broken left arm, has done that in previous practices but has then sat out the rest of the time.
