ATHENS —  Cade Mays held Georgia’s so-called “Great Wall” offensive linetogether once again, playing three different line positions in the 63-17 win over Murray State on Saturday.

Mays made his second consecutive start at right guard for the No. 3-ranked Bulldogs. And then, for the second straight game, he proceeded to play two other line positions — right tackle and left tackle.

“He’s very valuable, (and) his strength is his diversity,” Georgia coach Kirby Smart said following the game at Sanford Stadium on Saturday. “He can play a lot of positions, he is very smart, he practices all those positions. But with Cade, regardless of what position, he has fire in his belly. Cade is a competitor. Cade loves to win.”

The Bulldogs counted on Mays’ versatility on Saturday with sophomore right tackle Isaiah Wilson sidelined by a sprained ankle, and sophomore Jamaree Salyer just returning from injury himself.

Smart knew he could count on Mays to step up and handle his assignments.

“I love the way he plays the game,” Smart said. “He plays the game the right way.”

Mays lost track of how snaps he played, instead zeroed in on where the offensive line needs to improve.

“The effort is always there, but we didn’t start nearly as good as we needed to,” Mays said. “I don’t think it’s an effort thing, I think it’s trying to come out and execute.

“We gave up a sack in that first quarter, that’s something we have to work on and take more pride in, just keeping him upright.”

It was the first time Jake Fromm had been sacked this year, but he was hit four times in the 30-6 win at Vanderbilt in the opening week.

Mays hasn’t played a role in any of the hits, despite switching positions multiple times in each of the first two games.

“It’s really just second nature, I do it in practice, I just go over here and do my assignment, and go over there and do that assignment,” Mays said of moving around on the line.
