MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Georgia freshman receiver Riley Ridley has an ankle injury and looks likely to be out of Friday’s bowl game.

Ridley was on crutches at the team hotel on Thursday morning, just over 24 hours before kickoff against TCU in the Liberty Bowl. Head coach Kirby Smart said there could be ligament damage and it “doesn’t look good” for Ridley being able to play Friday.

“He had an ankle that we’re checking on that looks like he’s got ligament damage in there. So he’s probably going to be out for this game,” Smart said.

Smart said it happened early in Georgia’s practice on Tuesday.

“He got rolled on up on from behind and didn’t see it coming, soit doesn’t look good for him,” Smart said. “I hate it for him, because he’s a great kid, and he has had some really good bowl practices, coming into his own. He just needed time, and that’s what the bowl game has afforded him, and now it doesn’t look like he’ll be able to play.”

Ridley is fourth on the team this season with 238 receiving yards, on 12 catches. The team is also expected to be without sophomore receiver Michael Chigbu, who had nine catches for 88 yards. Chigbu is dealing with knee soreness.

Sophomore Jayson Stanley, who missed the final four games of the regular season with a foot injury, is healthy and “has had some good practices,” according to Smart. Senior Kenneth Towns, a non-factor most of the season because of injury, is also ready to go.

Terry Godwin, Isaiah McKenzie, Reggie Davis and Javon Wims are receivers Smart mentioned, in addition to Stanley and Towns.

“We’ve got a core group of receivers that have all kind of depended on each other. It’s just Riley has been one of the more physical guys that we lose out on now,” Smart said.
