Carson Beck primed for bigger role against UAB for Georgia football
Kirby Smart and the Georgia coaches probably hoped they would get a chance to see what Carson Beck could do against UAB.
They just didn’t think those game reps would possibly come in the first quarter.
That is now a very real possibility after it has been learned that Georgia quarterback JT Daniels is dealing with an upper-body injury.
Daniels’ status is questionable for this Saturday’s game. He could very well end up starting and playing, as DawgNation’s Mike Griffith reports that Daniels first picked up the injury during Georgia’s second scrimmage.

But this is a game where the Bulldogs should have plenty of talent to overwhelm their opponent. Which is why, due to precautionary measures with Daniels, we could see Beck play a very meaningful role in the Georgia offense come Saturday.
The next pass Beck throws in a game will be his first. He appeared briefly in Georgia’s win over Missouri in 2020, but he simply handed the ball off in the fourth quarter of that win.
Beck signed with Georgia as a member of the 2020 signing class and was an early enrollee. Beck didn’t get a chance to take advantage of those extra spring practices as they were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Georgia coaches took note of that step forward, with offensive coordinator Todd Monken and Smart acknowledging Beck earned No. 2 quarterback job coming out of spring practice.
That is even with the Bulldogs having options like Stetson Bennett and Brock Vandagriff. Bennett started five games last season for the Bulldogs, going 3-2 against an all-SEC slate. Vandagriff finds himself in a similar position that Beck did a season ago, though Vandagriff has the added weight of living up to 5-star expectations.

Vandagriff has earned praise this week for how he’s played while working with the scout team.
But make no mistake about it: Beck is the clear No. 2 behind Daniels.
“Carson’s (Beck) been our number two quarterback,” Smart said this week. “He’s worked with the twos and has worked a lot there, taken a lot of reps. Stetson still gets some reps from time to time but he’s got a lot of bank reps so we ask him to do a lot of things mentally to be prepared and ready to go.”
