One of UGA’s all-time best linebackers is returning to the Bulldogs to help coach the defense.

Jones who earned All-America honors at UGA in 2012, was listed as a “student assistant for the defense,” in the new football media guide that was posted online on Thursday. He last played in the NFL in 2016.

Jones not only is a former Bulldogs standout, but has also had a connection on the team’s current coaching staff — running backs coach Dell McGee, who coached Jones at Carver High School in Columbus, Ga.

Jones originally signed with USC out of Carver, but decided to transfer from the Trojans after team doctors did not clear him to play after his freshman season due to a concern over a neck injury.

He started every game for two seasons at UGA, later becoming the No. 17 overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Jones played four seasons with the Steelers.

Other notable student assistants on this year’s team are Juwan Taylor (started 9 games at linebacker for UGA last year) and J.T. Dooley (former walk-on who is the grandson of Bulldogs coaching legend Vince Dooley).
