Jayson Stanley’s “experiment” with the Atlanta Falcons is off to a good start.

Stanley signed as a rookie free-agent with the NFL team after going undrafted.

Even though Stanley played exclusively receiver and special teams at UGA, the Falcons thought so highly of his athleticism that they’re trying Stanley out on the other side of the ball – at defensive back.

Falcons coach Dan Quinn praised Stanley this weekend after practice during the team’s rookie minicamp:

“He had been such an impact on special teams (at Georgia) that we thought the tackling and the physicality, if we could convert him over and use some of that size and length at corner,” Falcons coach Dan Quinn told AtlantaFalcons.com’s Will McFadden. “… I would say I was encouraged by the first two days.”

Stanley, who stands 6-foot-2 and 207 pounds, appeared in 37 games at UGA over four seasons, catching 3 passes for 32 yards and one touchdown. He excelled on special teams. His position switch in the NFL will make some UGA fans wonder whether the Bulldogs should’ve considered the same.

With Stanley being a rookie free-agent, the odds are against him making an NFL roster. However, if he can catch on with the Falcons on special teams or with the practice squad, then he’ll have more time to learn his new position. NFL teams don’t really spend much time “experimenting” with major position changes to the other side of the ball, so the fact that they’re doing this is a compliment to Stanley.
