Georgia added another quarterback to its quarterback room on Thursday as USC quarterback JT Daniels announced his commitment to Georgia, transferring from USC.
Georgia also brought in Wake Forest quarterback Jamie Newman earlier this offseason. Georgia must replace Jake Fromm, a three-year starter at the position. Daniels entered the transfer portal in April, meaning Georgia coaches have the opportunity to reach out and communicate with him.
Daniels did miss all but one game during the 2019 season as he suffered a torn ACL and meniscus in USC’s season-opening win over Fresno State.
As a freshman, Daniels threw 14 touchdowns to 10 interceptions while passing for 2.672 yards. The USC program as a whole struggled that season.
It is not yet known whether Daniels will be immediately eligible for the 2020 season. If he is, he will have three years to play three seasons. Daniels did use his redshirt last season, so in the event he is not deemed eligible he would have to seasons of eligibility left.

Daniels was one of the top-rated quarterbacks in the 2018 recruiting cycle, ranking only behind Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields in the 247Sports Composite rankings. What makes his high ranking even more impressive is that he reclassified so that he could graduate early from high school and enroll at USC in June of 2018.
If Daniels is granted immediate eligibility, as high-profile transfer quarterbacks Fields and Tate Martell were a season-ago, he will likely compete with Newman for the starting job in 2020. Newman has just one season of eligibility remaining, while Daniels has multiple. The Bulldogs also have quarterback Carson Beck, D’Wan Mathis and Stetson Bennett on the roster, as well as a commitment from 5-star quarterback Brock Vandergriff in the 2021 recruiting cycle.
In his time as Georgia’s head coach Kirby Smart has not taken a transfer that has not been immediately eligible. He has landed several graduate transfers in the past, and Demetris Robertson was granted eligibility
Georgia opens the 2021 season against Clemson, while it starts the 2020 campaign against Virginia.
