In Kirby Smart’s words, “Christmas came early” when running back Nick Chubb decided to come back for his senior season and play another year for the Georgia Bulldogs.
How did the second-year head coach find out? Smart and Chubb told the story on Tuesday at SEC Media Days.
Both of them tell a great story,” Dawg Nation’s Chip Towers said. “It started out with Nick Chubb sending a text to his coach saying, ‘We need to talk’ and Kirby’s response via text was, ‘What’s it about? You’re freaking me out.’”
Smart obviously had an idea on what the conversation would be about, but the anticipation of finding out the answer made him tense.
“He [Smart] said, literally, he was on pins and needles until they finally got the chance to sit down together in his office,” Towers said.
When Chubb announced that he would return for his senior season, it was met with silence from Smart, but only because the coach had nothing to say.
“[Smart said] ‘I didn’t say anything. I heard all I wanted to hear. I didn’t want to say anything to interrupt.'”
If the Bulldogs go on to win big this season, this meeting could be one that goes down in Georgia football lore.
