UGA coach Kirby Smart released a statement Thursday evening offering his sympathy to the loved ones of the UGA students who were killed and injured in a car accident Wednesday night in Oconee County.

“Our sincerest condolences go out to the family and friends of the Georgia students involved in the devastating automobile accident Wednesday night,” Smart said. “It has brought tragedy to an entire campus and we extend our sincerest sympathy to all those who have been touched by this heartbreaking event.”

Four UGA students were killed and one was critically injured on the two-lane road along Highway 15 in Watkinsville just south of Athens. Authorities said a car crossed over the center line and collided with another automobile. The victims were in a separate white car that struck the other automobile, according to authorities. Three women died at the scene while another woman died at Athens Regional Medical Center.
