There’s been a lot of trade action in the NFL this Wednesday, and the latest player on the move is a former Georgia Bulldog.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Los Angeles Rams have traded linebacker Alec Ogletree to the New York Giants.
Ogletree had been with the Rams since they were still in St. Louis, when the team drafted him in the first round, 30th overall in 2013.
Eight minutes after Schefter tweeted the news of the trade, former Georgia running back Todd Gurley voiced his displeasure from his own Twitter account.
Gurley and Ogletree were teammates for one season in Athens in 2012. It was Gurley’s freshman season and Ogletree’s junior and final season between the hedges. They led Georgia to an SEC East title and were a part of the infamous 2012 SEC Championship Game, upon which we will not further elaborate.
They were reunited in the NFL three years ago when the Rams drafted Gurley No. 10 overall.
The trade is relatively surprising given how valuable and reliable Ogletree has been to the Rams defense. In his five seasons with the franchise, he started 16 games three times, 15 games another season, and 4 games in a season deterred by injury. He had three seasons in which he recorded more than 100 tackles and another one with 95 stops.
This story does have a happy ending from the Bulldogs point of view. Ogletree will now join up with another former teammate in New York, Tavarres King. The two were teammates in Athens for Ogletree’s entire three-year Georgia career, when King was one of the top wide receivers on the team.
