Alabama earns commitment from UGA RB target
Cameron Akers drove up to Tuscaloosa today thinking today was going to be big. It was.
He became the seventh prospect in the Class of 2017 to commit to Alabama. He told the AJC on Tuesday night he committed to the Crimson Tide. UGA was his third choice in that pecking order.
The 5-foot-11, 212-pounder got his offer from UGA at Dawg Night on July 18, but Alabama had already beaten the Bulldogs to the punch. He ran a personal-best 4.41 in the 40-yard dash at UGA that night.
“My parents and I felt this was the best situation and opportunity to live out my dream,” he said. “We think this is the best school for me to make that happen.”
The 4-star running has been rated the No. 1 prospect in Mississippi, the No. 5 RB and the No. 24 player overall per the 247sports composite.
Akers said Alabama offered him as a running back. He also wanted to get his commitment out of the way before the start of his junior year.
“Just get it out the way so it won’t be a distraction so I can focus on winning a state championship,” he said. “That’s my main goal as a football player right now to win a state championship.”
When he committed on Tuesday, he said head coach Nick Saban shared a promise.
“Coach Saban just told me they believe in producing successful men and not just football players,” Akers said. “He said my life after football would be successful if I came to Alabama and got an education there. He told me I would be successful as a man in the future well after my career ends at Alabama. He said their job as coaches is to help me to grow up to be a successful man.”
The rising junior plans to study sports medicine in college. He got his first offers during his freshman season. Those were from both Mississippi State and Ole Miss
