One of Georgia’s prized commits in the recruiting class of 2019 just got a huge boost.

Nolan Smith II, a 5-star defensive end prospect from Savannah who plays at IMG Academy in Florida, is now the No.1 player in his class, according to the newly released rankings from 247Sports on Thursday.

“The Georgia commit is polished, dominated elite competition last year as an underclassman, and at 6 feet, 3 inches, 235 pounds, he has no size concerns,” 247Sports’ Barton Simmons writes. “Smith is the rare prospect that is both safe and has immense upside.”

Smith is a longtime Bulldogs commitment who has made a significant effort to recruit a lot of other big name talent to Athens since he committed.

“The target on my back just got bigger than it already is,” Smith said, according to Kipp Adams of Dawgs247. “The people at The Opening all wanted to get reps in against me. Now, I can look forward to getting everyone’s best this season. To whom much is given, much will be required from him.”

After bringing in the No. 3-ranked class in 2017 and the No. 1 class for 2018, Kirby Smart and the Bulldogs currently rank No. 15 nationally on the 247Sports team composite. That low ranking is mostly due to just sheer volume of commitments. Georgia only has 10 pledges right now, but three of them are 5-star prospects. Smith doesn’t seem to be very worried, knowing things will take care of themselves.

“People are sleeping on our class, but the guys we are bringing in are really talented,” he told Adams. “We know they can play. And the ones who join them will be elite, and they will be talking about this class on signing day and again three years from now as being truly special.”
