Tyson Campbell already was a very fast football player. Now he’s even faster.
Campbell, who signed with Georgia in February as the nation’s No. 2 cornerback prospect, has lowered his personal-best time in the 100 meters this spring. He competes for the American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.) track team.
Anthony Schwartz, his teammate, signed to play receiver at Auburn. He’s the first flash in gold in the video below.
Campbell is not heavily considering running track at UGA, but he could. He will be one of the fastest players on the football team when he reports this summer.
Coach Kirby Smart even said as much on National Signing Day. Smart — keen on seeing potential Bulldogs run track — is well aware of his times. The 6-foot-2½ Campbell checks the elite box in both the size and speed categories. He ended the recruiting year as the nation’s No. 12 overall prospect on the 247Sports composite.
“He’s a great track athlete, 10.4 100 meters, and I don’t know if you know much about that, but that’s faster than pretty much anybody we’ve got on our team right now, and he’s big,” Smart said. “So he’s big and he’s fast. He’s a 20.8 200 meters. I mean, the guy can fly, and he’s really competitive. Obviously, we know what the stature and the size bring, but more important than that on Tyson Campbell are his intangibles.”
Campbell won the FHSAA Class 2A state titles in the 100 and 200 last spring after teammate Schwartz sustained an injury.
As Smart talked about Campbell on Signing Day, it was clear he’s excited to coach the speedster.
“First of all, he’s an extremely high-character kid,” Smart said. “This [recruiting] process took its toll on him and his family because he’s a great kid. He’s from a wonderful school that’s supplied the University of Georgia with some really good players.”
