BEAVERTON, Ore. — The first day of the 2017 Nike Opening finals began the way it always does: That means with the QBs, TEs and WRs.
The first day and second of the elite prospect showcase always gives the offenses a head start. That’s necessary to install what they want to do during the 7-on-7 tournament that takes place over the last two days of The Opening.
What did Dawgnation learn on the first day under those paraments? Well, it was pretty QB heavy. I stuck my face up on Facebook Live on Thursday night for about 20 minutes to share that in front of another sunny Portland vista.
Here’s what that looked like:
What stood out to me on the big picture beyond that?
- Georgia is in great shape at the QB spot. It now seems like the Bulldogs will very likely add either 5-star QB Matt Corral or 5-star QB Justin Fields when all is said and done for the 2018 class.
- Did they say that? Of course not. But my perspective is that Matt Corral and Justin Fields will eventually slot at two of the following four schools: Alabama, Florida, Florida State and Georgia.
- Corral isn’t really talking to FSU, but that covers all the bases.
- Fields said he might wait until he takes all of his official visits prior to making his decision.
- Jerry Rice chats poses with a couple of campers at the Nike 2017 Opening finals on Thursday. He still looks like he could shake a corner or three. (Sam Spiegelman/SEC Country) Corral — who de-committed from USC back on June 17 — hopes to visit Alabama, Florida and Georgia in late July. He hopes to make his college decision before his senior season at Long Beach Poly.
- 4-star UGA target Kearis Jackson put up two pretty solid video bombs on Thursday.
- Jerry Rice still looks like he could catch a post route and put six points on the board. The NFL’s greatest all-time receiver in my book was working with the Nike Opening campers on Thursday.
