UGA could be in the mix for an official visit from the nation’s top-rated inside linebacker later this fall.

Ben Davis, a 5-star from Gordo, Ala., told the AJC’s DawgNation.com that he’ll announce his official visits next week. And among them could be a trip to Athens.

“I know for a fact I’ll probably go to Florida State, LSU, Alabama and Auburn,” Davis said. “And I’m debating if it’s going to be Georgia or USC for my fifth one.”

There was some discussion that Davis may take an unofficial visit to UGA this Saturday for its game against Alabama, but that never materialized. Nonetheless, Saturday’s game will have an impact on his decision whether he’s in attendance for it or not.

“It’s going to be a real good game,” Davis said. “It probably is going to play a part in my decision. That’s why I’m going to wait until signing day to see how teams do this fall. It won’t affect it that much, but it’ll play a little role.”

The 6-foot-3, 240-pound linebacker said it’ll be an opportunity to see how both defensive coordinators rotate their freshman and upperclassmen. He maintained that he isn’t necessarily worried about the score, but more about how the defenses perform.

Davis is rated as the No. 16 overall player  in the country.

What it means: If UGA is among the three schools going at him the hardest and it still has not earned one of his five official visits then he’s the longest of shots to sign with the Bulldogs. If he was serious about attending UGA, he’d have found a way to be at the Alabama game this weekend. Even if it’s not classified as an official, that’s the best portal to see all that UGA has to offer. — Jeff Sentell, DawgNation.com
