BEAVERTON, Ore. — It gets real at The Opening tomorrow.
The first two days saw the quarterbacks go through their Elite 11 workouts with the receivers and tight ends who also came to town early. The Opening starts up tomorrow and the rest of the 166 invited guests join the fray to figure out just who the best players in the nation really are.
The rains came Thursday. There really wasn’t much to the morning session, but just a lot of mental reps with quarterbacks and receivers running routes on air with their 7-on-7 teams to get ready for the weekend.
Defenses are always ahead of the offenses in settings like this with such a short time for the players to get to know what each other can do. So the extra couple of days for the quarterbacks and receivers should balance the scales just a bit. That said, a lot of the work that was put in Thursday morning was at three-quarters speed, if that.
“They want us to save our legs for the weekend,” UGA commitment Trey Blount said.
It was a slow news day, but there was at least one big story.
Toneil Carter backs up his decision timeline just a bit
DawgNation reported Wednesday night that 4-star RB Toneil Carter (Langham Creek High School / Houston, Tex.) was set to make his announcement sometime Friday, but he tweeted Thursday morning that was no longer the case.
Carter remains a huge priority get for Kirby Smart’s program. He’s rated as the nation’s No. 5 running back for 2017 and can blister the 100 meters in 10.5 seconds. He’s right at six feet tall and about 200 pounds. It will be interesting to see his laser time in the 40-yard dash at The Opening this week.

DawgNation quickly got in touch with Carter and he said he pumped the brakes on his decision, but only just a bit. He said to still expect the decision this week. This looks like he wanted to do it over the weekend where it might get a little more exposure.
Jake Fromm and Trey Blount are fast friends
We had the chance to chat Thursday with UGA commits Trey Blount and Jake Fromm and there wasn’t a lot of news there. Sure they are going to get after it this week. They will play well and represent Georgia. They will also make sure the top targets in town know all about the new Georgia.
But it was interesting to watch the two of them interact at the same time. Blount and Fromm both have over-the-top happy dispositions. They are great communicators and just have a way of fitting in with any social setting. They have charisma. It makes them easily likable.
They are just good dudes. Simple as that.
Those two are on the same floor at their hotel in Oregon. They both mentioned said 4-star receiver Jeremiah Holloman was the major target for both of them this week. His room is sandwiched in between their own rooms.
“Trust me he has a lot of Georgia in his ear,” Blount said.
Blount said one key thing about Fromm on Thursday.
“Jake is definitely a down-to-earth and a humble kid,” Blount said. “Great person all around. We talked before we came up here and he said some things that really opened my eyes and I feel like I could get really close with him.”
Fromm continued to dance around to his favorite hip-hop songs during drills on Thursday. Both guys talked up the gear they got from Nike. They liked their backpacks and their jackets. Fromm liked his jacket so much he didn’t really want to touch it or put it on.
Crib notes for The Opening
There are a few things that should happen over the next few days in Oregon so it makes sense to recap those of interest to Georgia football:
- 4-star RB target Toneil Carter should commit at some point. Georgia is the favorite.
- 4-star OT target Andrew Thomas will commit on Sunday. Georgia is also the team to beat here.
- 4-star CB Jamyest Williams is expected to release his Top 5 at some point. Look for Georgia to make that list.
Friday’s schedule starts off with testing
So just how fast is everybody really? Those laser times in the 40-yard dash will figure that out as part of Nike’s Sparq testing. That’s just part of the slate for a busy day at Nike.
Friday’s events at The Opening
9 AM-10:45 AM: Nike football testing
1:30 PM-3:30 PM: Nike football training camp
