Jaden Hunter tweeted “they know wassup now” on Wednesday night.
That’s a fitting way to share his appreciation for UGA offering one of his talented teammates at Westlake High in Atlanta. UGA decided to extend a scholarship offer to 6-foot-2 cornerback AJ Terrell after taking a good look at his junior film. Hunter, a 4-star linebacker, committed to the Class of 2017 at UGA last month.
Terrell first tweeted out the news of his new offer on Wednesday. He told DawgNation he was personally offered by head coach Kirby Smart.
“He told me that he liked my play and my size and length,” Terrell said. “He said he really liked my film.”
Terrell said Smart offered him as a defensive back and didn’t specify a position. He thinks he can play both positions at the college level and also enjoys working at cornerback and free safety. The 180-pound junior said he’s been timed at 4.5 seconds in the 40-yard dash.
“That UGA offer means a lot to me,” Terrell said. “This is pretty humbling. I don’t have a favorite school but I’m just going through the process right now and dealing with everything one thing at a time.”
Terrell said that Hunter had been telling him for awhile that he didn’t know why UGA had yet to offer. He held his own in coverage against 5-star prospect and major UGA target DeAngelo Gibbs last fall during the state playoffs.
“Now that Georgia has offered I know he is going to recruit me to go there with him,” Terrell said. “He’s my friend, but I bet it will now be my own friend trying to recruit me hard.”
He thinks he will decide late in the process and has yet to make up his mind about whether he will work to graduate early. He tries to pattern his game after former Florida State standout Jalen Ramsey and used the words “long” and “physical” and “playmaker” to describe his playing style.
“Coach Smart said he was looking for bigger and longer cornerbacks,” Terrell said. “He said I fit that style he is looking for.”
The 175-pound junior currently rates as a 3-star prospect and as the No. 28 cornerback for the Class of 2017. His offer list now includes UGA, Auburn, Clemson, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia Tech.
